I've been watching the Michael Jackson shirts available on eBay even sense his death and some interesting trends have developed.
First, the number of shirts available has skyrocketed, when he died there were about 435 shirts listed as available, as of now there 4,888. More than 10x as many within a week. One great benefit of all the new listings is the variety of vintage Michael Jackson shirts that are available. Every phase of his career and every tour are represented.
Second, what fans are willing to pay for vintage Michael Jackson shirts has gotten out of hand. Just hours after his death there was a "signed" shirt available on eBay, the shirt has had less than ninety minutes remaining on the auction. Within a fifteen minutes the current bid went from $6.50 to over $150.00. There were multiple listings for the same style of shirt so I'm very skeptical about the authenticity of the autograph.
Lastly, I'm amazed at what sellers think their shirts are worth. Buy now prices from shirts that were $50.00 are now $800. There are numerous shirts with Buy Now prices at or over $1000. There are even a few crazy people out there listing shirts for five or ten thousand dollars. 1988 Bad Tour shirt, lowest bid $5,000 or Buy Now $10,000, strangely no bids; take a look here.
